Thanks for visiting our website and finding out the latest information about our school. All 515 K-5 students are known as the Robertson Rockets, and our school colors are a very patriotic red, white and blue. Robertson serves a dynamic and diverse student population, making us a reflection of the Yakima community. It is a fun place to gain new knowledge, learn useful skills and make great friends. We have an excellent staff and wonderful parents who are continuously striving to make our school better in every way. Our three goals are to increase student attendance, increase parent and community involvement, and increase student achievement.
We always try to communicate with our families and community on a regular and timely basis through a variety of methods. Our reader boards on Lincoln Avenue and Powerhouse Road are up-to-date with the latest happenings at Robertson – thanks to dedicated parents who display our important messages. Also, every month parents are sent a newsletter with school news, upcoming school and PTA events, parenting information, a school lunch menu, and more. In the fall and spring, teachers conduct parent conferences that we hope all parents will attend. Our PTA organizes and conducts fundraising, educational and social activities for the students, parents and staff at Robertson. We believe that strong communication and parent involvement are essential to student success in school.
Our faculty members meet the definition of highly qualified staff under the law. Every teacher has a degree and endorsement in the areas in which they teach. Many of our teachers have advanced degrees, and others are working toward them. Teachers and other staff have considerable experience and expertise, and they are constantly learning new information and skills to increase their knowledge and skills. They are lifelong learners.
As you know, our state developed and implemented an assessment tool called the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in 1997. It has been in place in one form or another since then. Such an instrument was required under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. Gradually the state has expanded the WASL to include more grade levels and more subject areas. Over the past few years, the Yakima School District and Robertson have adopted and implemented new curricula in reading and math that are aligned with state standards. At Robertson, our staff has strived to keep up with the many changes and expectations. Our students have performed well on the reading WASL over the past few years, and we will continue with that success. We are working hard to help students achieve more in math. We want to give our students the best education possible while meeting the expectations of the state and federal governments.
If we can answer any of your questions, please contact us at any time. Together we can make a positive difference in the lives of all children.
Sincerely,
Richard E. Hansen
